Huntsville Speedway Challenge Series:
Scotty Formosa and David Kilgore Split Wins in
Huntsville Speedway Challenge Series
By Chuck Chamblee |
Thursday, July 29th, 2010
In the first feature
race Scotty Formosa
moved David Kilgore out
of the lead late in the
running to pick up his
first HSCS win of the
season. Kilgore
was leading late, but
his older tires were no
match for Formosa's
fresher tires.
In race two Kilgore
would return the favor
to Formosa, moving him
out of the way to take
the lead around half-way
through the 125-lap
event. Chuck
Chamblee led the race
through lap 100, but
gave way to Kilgore's
fresher tires on lap
101.

SSRL Nationwide FasTrack Series:
Penalty for Moody Lands Baucom in FasTrack Victory Lane at Atlanta
By Chuck Chamblee |
Wednesday, July 28th, 2010
After a dominating
performance and sending
the rest of the guys to
school on how to drive a
race car on the Atlanta
Motor Speedway, a simple
speeding penalty during
the last green-flag pit
stop would pull the rug
out from under Ryan
Moody, giving 2nd place
finisher Robert Baucom
the win.
Baucom and Moody spent
most of the night in
close-quarter combat,
but it was some of the
best racing we've seen
all year between the
two. Baucom was
the pole-sitter and led
the opening laps, but
David Kilgore would get
out front and lead 21
laps of the 114-lap
event. Kilgore's
night came to an end
after getting caught up
in a spin by Chuck
Chamblee after Chamblee
got loose while racing
Moody for the lead after
a restart.
Although Scotty Formosa
had a pretty good car,
he was no match for
Moody either. The
top three cars of Moody,
Baucom and Formosa were
clearly the drivers that
were going to settle
things in the end.
The turning point in the
race came during a lap
100 green-flag pit stop.
Moody could not get his
#7 Geico machine slowed
coming to the commitment
line entering pit road,
exceeding the 45 mph
speed by almost 7 mph.
Moody went on to lead
the remainder of the
race and took the
checkered flag first,
but officials penalized
him in the post-race
inspection for the
speeding infraction.
Robert Baucom woulf be
given the win, followed
by Scotty Formosa, Allen
Marshall, Jeff Rogers
and Chuck Chamblee.
Luke Grafx would take
the top three positions.

SSRL
Cup Series:
Chamblee Wins at the Brickyard
By Chuck Chamblee |
Tuesday, July 27th, 2010
As the SSRL Cup season
creeps closer and closer
to the chase segment of
the championship,
seeding points are
beginning to be on some
of the top twelve
drivers' priorities
list. Chuck
Chamblee is one of the
top-twelve drivers that
has prioritized winning
races over collecting
points as of late, which
was obvious to his
competitors and race
fans Monday night after
he picked up his first
ever Brickyard trophy at
Indianapolis Motor
Speedway.
Lickskillet, Alabama's
Derrick Claunch took top
honors in qualifying,
and would lead the field
of 21 starters to the
green flag. The
night got off to a rough
start for some,
including series point
leader and five-time
winner this year's
Scotty Formosa, as he
was the second car out
of contention due to
ignition problems on the
County Line Motors, Luke
Grafx Chevrolet.
3rd place point man
Daniel Frederick, Jr was
also sidelined early
after being caught-up in
an early incident.
But several drivers,
including Chamblee were
having a great night.
Ryan Moody emerged as
the race leader after
things settled down with
the caution flags, after
many drivers put into
practice their pit
strategies to try to
capitalize later in the
race. Botched
restarts also played
havoc on some drivers,
making mid-pack a fairly
dangerous place to be.
Up front at the half-way
point, Chase Spradlin
was ready to make his
bid for the lead,
passing Moody for the
lead after a hard-fought
battle. Chamblee
followed suit with a
pass on Moody to take
over 2nd, as Chris Ginn
worked his way into the
top five. Chamblee
moved in on Spradlin a
few laps later and took
the lead, showing that
he was going to be a
force to be reckoned
with. Chamblee and
Spradlin would swap the
lead a couple of times
in a great show of
sportsmanship, each
respecting the others'
racing room.
But inside the final 30
laps Ginn would position
himself as the race
leader after a caution
period, leading eight
laps before Chamblee got
by him to retake the
lead. Spradlin
also got back by Ginn a
few laps later and ran
right in step with
Chamblee as the duo
began to close in on
their final pit stops.
That stop would come on
lap 65 with just 15 laps
remaining as Chamblee
peeled off of turn 4
under green, with
Spradlin right on his
heels. Chamblee
locked his brakes trying
to get the #25 Bobby
Allison Racing Pontiac
slowed to the required
pit road speed of 55
mph, just barely missing
a speeding penalty.
Both cars got their pit
work done in a hurry,
but it would be Spradlin
off pit road first to
take the lead.
Chamblee didn't seem too
worried though as he
ghosted Spradlin for the
next nine laps.
Spradlin did a masterful
job of breaking the
slipstream, trying to
keep Chamblee from
gaining any momentum in
the closing laps.
But Spradlin's car began
to get tight off the
corners, allowing
Chamblee to gain on him
on the long
straightaways.
Chamblee drew alongside
Spradlin down the
backstretch with just
four laps to go, but
Spradlin was able to
hold him off going into
turn three. But
once again Chamblee used
momentum to get to the
outside of Spradlin on
the backstretch with
just two laps to go,
this time clearing
Spradlin and looking
towards the white flag.
Once clear, Chamblee
pulled out to a ten-car
length lead and held on
to take the win.
Spradlin would hang on
to finish 2nd, followed
by Derrick Claunch,
Chris Ginn and Mike
Keller, rounding out the
top five finishers.

Brian McBrayer took the
lead on the final lap of
last night's 200-lap Pro

SSRL Madhouse Series:
Ginn Leads Flag to Flag at the Madhouse
By Chuck Chamblee |
Friday, July 23rd, 2010
Chris Ginn was last
night's winner at the
Madhouse, leading all
100 laps from the pole
position. David
Kilgore held the 2nd
position in the early
going, but spun before
the half-way point after
contact with a lapped
car. Matt Vaade
took over 2nd at that
point, with Kevin Chance
battling with Jeff
Rogers for the 3rd
position.
Nashville, Tennessee's
Jeff Belt ran in the 5th
position. By
comparison, the race was
a tame one with only
five caution periods all
night.
Next week the Madhouse
will be running the
random invert again at
the half-way point.

SSRL Jr Late Model Series:
Baucom Wins Series One Finale at South Georgia
Motorsports Park
By Chuck Chamblee |
Saturday, July 3rd, 2010
Robert Baucom
picked up his 3rd series win in a row in the SSRL Jr Late Model Series by dominating
last night's event at South Georgia Motorsports Park. While Baucom had
little trouble with the win, the racing for 2nd and 3rd was exciting early on
between Chris Ginn, Rob Matthews and Jeff Rogers. Ginn fell out of the
running on lap 83 after he spun and backed into the turn one wall. In the
final laps, Matthews was the only driver with a shot at Baucom but he couldn't
close the deal. Baucom took the win and, the 2010 Series One Jr Late Model
Series championship.
Series Two begins
on July 30th at Hickory Motor Speedway, and will be open to any driver with less
than 5 SSRL wins this year. Baucom will be setting his sights on his next
league championship, as he competes in all series currently running in the SSRL.
